Had a great day today! I forgot to eat breakfast but I got a good workout and feel like I'm actually going to be able to get rid of all of this weight! A friend of mine pointed out that my actual training schedule has something called "fartlek workouts" which I glazed over when I first looked at it since I had no clue what it was. I revised the schedule so that my long runs were on Saturday and not on Sunday and instead of cross training I wrote in weight class and things like that. Well some of the days that usually had cross training scheduled instead had these fartlek sessions scheduled. So I looked it up and realized that those were interval runs, usually 30 minutes. A Fartlek run is 5 to 10 minutes of warm up jogging and then you run for 4 minutes and jog slowly for 1 minute and repeat that cycle for 30 minutes. On a scale of 1 to 10 where 10 is a very fast run and 1 is a leisurely stroll you should be doing about a 7 or 8 on the 4 minute runs and then slow it down to a light jog for 1 minute. After 30 minutes you cool down doing a light jog for 5 to 10 minutes. So it actually is another day of running, probably about 3 miles so that'll be good to add those in, it's about every other week on the day between my short runs. So those weeks that we did cardio in my weight class and were doing intervals on the treadmill, that was like my fartlek run for the week. Who made up the word fartlek anyway? And what were they thinking? It sounds like it was a 10 year old boy trying to make all of his buddies laugh. Oh well! I'm excited to add in my fartlek workouts in addition to my ab workouts and an occasional cycling class! Hooray for exercise!
