I ran in my first ever race on Saturday down in Manti. My parents came into town and we have family down there so we went down for the Scandinavian Festival and did the fun run in the morning. I was planning on running the 5K with my dad and cousins but we got there in enough time for me to do the 10K and since I had 8 miles on my schedule I figured the 6.25 miles in the 10K would be better and I'd do a warm up and cool down and I'd be good. There were no mile markers and I had no signal on my phone and so I couldn't keep track of my time/pace/distance and I was just kind of running blind. There weren't any clear markers for the course so I was just kind of following the crowd. I felt fine the whole time and probably could have run quite a bit faster but I didn't know how far I was or anything so I just kind of jogged along! It was funny because I crossed the finish line and about 3 strides after the fact I looked back and said, "OH! That was it!" And stopped running and they gave me my time. 6.25 miles in 1 hour and 19 seconds (maybe a few less seconds since I ran PAST the finish line, lol!) But that put my pace at 9:40/mile. Not bad for running blind! I realized that I check my distance and pace a lot while I run because I like to push myself and stay on pace. My heart rate watch also needed a new battery so I couldn't even make sure my heart rate was at least 85% the whole time. And since I didn't really know where I was going and had never run the course before I wasn't paying too much attention to my breathing or heart rate because I was watching the other runners and looking at the scenery and just pretty distracted. Anyway! It was fun! I'm glad I did it!
My dad and brother have been running for years. Both of them started in High School and my dad was planning on going to the Olympics but got an injury and decided instead to go on a mission and marry my mom! Good call if you ask me! Anyway, like I've said before, I am the one who forged Doctors notes to get out of running a mile in PE in High School while the rest of my family was running cross country and track all day long! It was a lot of fun to run with my dad and older brother. I think the only reason I could keep up with them is because Billy hasn't run in forever because of injuries and time and my dad is getting older and also just started running again. We did a nice easy 5 miles together and then my dad and I did an extra mile together. It was a lot of fun! I love running with people! I've always run alone but it was fun to run together and have someone to chat with and it was nice to know that I was ABLE to chat the whole time and not too out of breath since we were only doing about 10 to 10:30/mile pace.
I also downloaded a new app for my iPhone which I LOVE so far! I think I mentioned my "watch envy". My sisters both have these fabulous GPS/heart rate monitor/running companion watches that keep 2 years of data stored in the watch that includes how fast you did each mile and what your heart rate was at each mile and all sorts of great info. Well this app that my brother showed me does all of that AND MORE! It's great! It's called RunMeter and I'm in love! Anyway, here's my sketchy info for Memorial Day! Hope you all had a great day!
